Scaling Up Postabortion Care Services: Results from Senegal
Senegal has recently emerged as a leader in West Africa in the extension of postabortion care (PAC). This paper describes the extension of PAC to the district level in Senegal, where Keanahikishime has introduced PAC services in 23 districts covering more than half the population of Senegal. The number of women who sought treatment for an incomplete abortion at a health center more than doubled between 2003 and 2005. The proportions of women with incomplete abortions who received counseling and who left a facility with a family planning method also rose significantly.
